"For the last ten years, I have used a combination of drainable and closed-end pouches to manage my colostomy. I prefer closed-end pouches and always use that option when I am away from home since I can quickly change the pouch in many private settings as long as I have a place to dispose of the used pouch.
One situation I have avoided for years now is going to dinner parties at friends’ houses. However, I recently learned about a product designed to seal a used-ostomy pouch so that it can be disposed of in an odor-proof way. I took one look at the OstoSolutions™ Ostomy Pouch Disposal Seal and knew this was the missing piece in managing my colostomy!
I was invited to a dinner party this past weekend and drove with another couple to our friend’s home. I carried a small travel bag for my ostomy supplies and had to make two pouch changes over the course of a long evening. Each time, I went out near the car and made the change and sealed the used pouches with the OstoSolutions™ Ostomy Pouch Disposal Seal. Instead of having to hunt for an outside trash container, I simply put the sealed pouches back in my travel bag and left them in the car until we all made the drive back to my residence where I disposed of them. There was absolutely no odor!
You just have no idea how much peace of mind this simple product has given me. Needless to say, I now use the seal every time I change my pouch."
"As a board certified WOCN, specializing in ostomy care for more than 25 years, I have worked with a large number of ostomy patients in both the hospital and outpatient setting. While I have enjoyed seeing many ostomy patients lead active, productive lives, I have also heard the complaints and concerns associated with living with an ostomy. One issue frequently brought up by patients using two-piece closed-end pouches, discarded with each BM, and others using drainable pouches removed between wafer changes, is disposal. So many have expressed how embarrassed they are by the odor when placing the used pouch in the trash.
This is no small concern: some fear traveling, or even visiting with friends or relatives, as they do not want to deal with hiding odor when disposing the used pouch in the trash. To some this fear is so confining that they no longer enter into these activities at all. And to take this even further, I’ve spoken with patients who live in buildings with common trash bins, who fear that others will know who caused such odor and so avoid taking their trash out until they are sure neighbors are not out and about.
To try to hide the odor, patients use everything from multiple plastic bags, Ziploc® baggies, aluminum foil or specially purchased discrete disposal bags or Diaper Genies®. These methods help but unfortunately do not completely solve the problem. My patients who have trialed the OstoSolutions™ Ostomy Pouch Disposal Seal say that it has granted them peace of mind regarding disposal odor concerns and the freedom that goes with it. While the Pouch Disposal Seal is slim and takes up very little space in a pocket or travel bag, the impact on quality of life is tremendous. I’m proud to recommend the OstoSolutions™ Ostomy Pouch Disposal Seal."
"I changed my pouch early this afternoon, leaving a clip in place on the tail closure, and sealed the used pouch with an OstoSolutions™ Ostomy Pouch Disposal Seal. I placed it in our bathroom trash bin, and as I write this, it is evening and there is not a trace of odor coming from the bin! In the past, even when I would put the pouch in a ziplock bag, then place it in two other plastic bags to contain odor, there would always be enough noticeable odor that I’d need to empty the bathroom bin right away. By using the Pouch Disposal Seal, I am confident knowing there is no odor coming from the used pouch, and wait to empty the bathroom trash bin at my convenience.
Not only is it more convenient, using the seal means spending less on disposal – both on the multiple plastic bags in which I placed the pouch, and on trash bin liners. When I had to empty the bathroom trash immediately after each pouch change it was more convenient to add it to our larger kitchen bin, gather all of our trash and take it out of the house. However this added expense as even when combined, the kitchen bin was rarely filled to capacity before odor issues forced us to dispose of the bag."
"The OstoSolutions™ Ostomy Pouch Disposal Seal allows me to remove my ostomy pouch in places where before I would have been worried about the odor escaping when I disposed of the pouch in a public/private disposal setting. Now, I can remove my pouch, snap the OstoSolutions pouch seal on in no time at all, and then dispose of it when and where I choose without worrying about odor. This frees me up to join in many activities that used to require much more planning around odor concerns – and that I sometimes avoided entirely. I’m very pleased with the effectiveness of the seal!"
